Tindie Blog | Easy Ambiance Lighting

Getting strips of RGB LEDs is only half the battle toward having cool lighting. You also need a controller that is configurable and can comfortably drive the LEDs. The Ambiance controller combines many desirable features into a nice, small package.

It’s powered by USB-C, which is awesome as this enables a larger current draw from power sources. This implementation is only for 5V strips, but it’s easy to see another version that supports USB-PD which can handle 12V strips as well. It’s capable of driving up to 200 LEDs, which is plenty for most setups I can see this being used for. As the name suggests, this is more suitable for ambient mood lighting rather than high-intensity lighting to fill a room brightly.

It’s controlled over Bluetooth, which is nice, so the controller can be tucked away somewhere with just a single USB cable and the LEDs connected to it. You can then use third-party software to, for example, have the colours change to reflect the colours on your monitor. This is very popular in gaming setups, and the example video below shows the Ambiance being used while playing No Man’s Sky. Very cool!
