Continental’s Bangalore Plant Commences Production of TPMS

At its facilities in Bangalore, Continental has initiated the manufacturing of passenger vehicle TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems) for passenger vehicles. The present output will be geared towards satisfying the requirements of the domestic market. During the following two years, the scope will also broaden to include the international markets. According to the information provided by the firm, at this time, it is the only Tier 1 supplier in India to produce TPMS. This allows for safer, ecologically sound, and more inclusive transportation. The Head of Motion Technologies and Services for Continental Automotive India, Ramnath Sivaraman, made the following statement: “At Continental, we are dedicated to India and the growing market needs there.” At the moment, customers have high expectations for the most recent advancements in automotive safety technology. Thus the issue of safe mobility is one that generates a lot of attention among them. The introduction of TPMS will be an important step towards realising India’s overarching goal for safe transportation. In addition, TPMS will help the cause of clean mobility since it will advise the driver on how to keep the appropriate amount of pressure in the tyres. We are in a strong position to serve local original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) concerning rising needs for innovative technologies at a reasonable cost because of our presence in the industry and our emphasis on the market.

TPMS checks the pressure-temperature, detects the tyre’s motion from the inside of the tyre, and then communicates this information to a display in the instrument cluster through radio frequency and the vehicle communication network. It gives the driver information that is correct as well as up-to-date on the temperature and pressure of the tyres for each position of the wheel. According to a statement made by the corporation in a press release, the driver must be aware of this information to keep the vehicle’s air pressure at the ideal level to preserve both its safety and efficiency.

Continental has a strong focus for localisation,” stated Phanindra Karody, Head of the Bangalore Plant for Continental Automotive India. The recently introduced TPMS product line utilises cutting-edge intelligent manufacturing methods throughout its production. This consists of an assembly line that is completely automated, complete with collaborating robots (Cobots), as well as a system that permits digital traceability. In our efforts to localise, we will proceed to increase the manufacturing of the TPMS line in accordance with the market’s requirements. In the subsequent three years, our goals are to significantly increase the production capacity and broaden the scope of our exports. At the factory, we have a smart manufacturing system that will assist us in reaching our expansion goals, which are in accordance with our annual aims.

Data, software, and AI are revolutionising the future of transportation. As we enter a future in which automobiles will be driven by software, those vehicles will become mobile computers. Continental is in a unique position to provide novel add-on TPMS capabilities, such as enhanced “problem tyre” localisation functions and ultraconvenient Smartphone Apps such as Filling Assistant and Tyre Data, with the goal of enhancing the usability of TPMS and the benefits it provides for the end user. Continental has taken use of this unique position.

TPMS offers cost savings due to optimised tyre usage due to driving at recommended tyre pressure for optimal rolling resistance, less CO2 emission, enhanced driving safety, an extended battery range for electric vehicles, and reduced fuel consumption. These benefits are made possible by the system’s ability to measure tyre pressure and temperature in a reliable and absolute manner. In addition, TPMS boasts better mobility safety through early leakage detection. It can be deployed as a stand-alone or integrated system solution. This flexibility allows for TPMS to be used in a variety of applications. TPMS has an expected lifespan of up to 10 years, an operational temperature range of -40 to 120 degrees Celsius, and a weight of 37 grammes.

About Smart Localisation

Continental has maintained a consistent approach when it comes to providing original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) with technological solutions that comply with government rules and requirements. In Continental’s pursuit of developing a manufacturing environment capable of long-term sustainability, the company has implemented digitalisation and automation of various industrial processes. The Continental facility in Bangalore is the company’s largest electronics production facility in India and serves as a model for a smart factory.

On the shop floor, technologies such as Big Data applications, augmented reality, artificial intelligence for face recognition, automated optical inspection, automated replenishment systems, automated guided vehicles and cobots are implemented. These technologies help in operational efficiency, meeting quality standards, remaining consistent in precision, and maintaining high transparency. According to the release, using intelligent manufacturing processes can provide a strategic edge in speedy localisation and a speedier product-to-market solution.
